Vector chiral order in frustrated spin chains
By means of a numerical analysis using a non-Abelian symmetry realization of
the density matrix renormalization group, we study the behavior of vector
chirality correlations in isotropic frustrated chains of spin S=1 and S=1/2,
subject to a strong external magnetic field. It is shown that the field induces
a phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, in line with earlier
theoretical predictions. We present results on the field dependence of the
order parameter and the critical exponents.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Eclipse Mapping of the Accretion Stream in UZ Fornacis
We present a new method to map the surface brightness of the accretionstreams in AM Herculis systems from observed light curves. Extensive tests ofthe algorithm show that it reliably reproduces the intensity distribution ofthe stream for data with a signal-to-noise ratio >5. As a first application, wemap the accretion stream emission of Civ lambda 1550 in the polar UZ Fornacisusing HST FOS high state spectra. We find three main emission regions along theaccretion stream: (1) On the ballistic part of the accretion stream, (2) on themagnetically funneled stream near the primary accretion spot, and (3) on themagnetically funneled stream at a position above the stagnation region
Complete genome sequence of Desulfocapsa sulfexigens, a marine deltaproteobacterium specialized in disproportionating inorganic sulfur compounds
Desulfocapsa sulfexigens SB164P1 (DSM 10523) belongs to the deltaproteobacterial family Desulfobulbaceae and is one of two validly described members of its genus. This strain was selected for genome sequencing, because it is the first marine bacterium reported to thrive on the disproportionation of elemental sulfur, a process with a unresolved enzymatic pathway in which elemental sulfur serves both as electron donor and electron acceptor. Furthermore, in contrast to its phylogenetically closest relatives, which are dissimilatory sulfate-reducers, D. sulfexigens is unable to grow by sulfate reduction and appears metabolically specialized in growing by disproportionating elemental sulfur, sulfite or thiosulfate with CO2 as the sole carbon source. The genome of D. sulfexigens contains the set of genes that is required for nitrogen fixation. In an acetylene assay it could be shown that the strain reduces acetylene to ethylene, which is indicative for N-fixation. The circular chromosome of D. sulfexigens SB164P1 comprises 3,986,761 bp and harbors 3,551 protein-coding genes of which 78% have a predicted function based on auto-annotation. The chromosome furthermore encodes 46 tRNA genes and 3 rRNA operons
A burst from the direction of UZ Fornacis with XMM-Newton
The XMM-Newton pointing towards the magnetic cataclysmic variable UZ For
finds the source to be a factor > 10^3 fainter than previous EXOSAT and ROSAT
observations. The source was not detected for the majority of a 22 ksec
exposure with the EPIC cameras, suggesting that the accretion rate either
decreased, or stopped altogether. However a 1.1 ksec burst was detected from UZ
For during the observation. Spectral fits favour optically thin, kT = 4.4 keV
thermal emission. Detection of the burst by the on-board Optical Monitor
indicates that this was most probably an accretion event. The 0.1-10 keV
luminosity of 2.1 x 10^30 erg/s is typical for accretion shock emission from
high state polars and would result from the potential energy release of ~ 10^16
g of gas. There is no significant soft excess due to reprocessing in the white

An Agent-Based Approach to Self-Organized Production
The chapter describes the modeling of a material handling system with the
production of individual units in a scheduled order. The units represent the
agents in the model and are transported in the system which is abstracted as a
directed graph. Since the hindrances of units on their path to the destination
can lead to inefficiencies in the production, the blockages of units are to be
reduced. Therefore, the units operate in the system by means of local
interactions in the conveying elements and indirect interactions based on a
measure of possible hindrances. If most of the units behave cooperatively
("socially"), the blockings in the system are reduced.
A simulation based on the model shows the collective behavior of the units in
the system. The transport processes in the simulation can be compared with the
processes in a real plant, which gives conclusions about the consequencies for

First measurement of the helicity asymmetry for in the resonance region
The first measurement of the helicity dependence of the photoproduction cross
section of single neutral pions off protons is reported for photon energies
from 600 to 2300\,MeV, covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are
compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses.
Strikingly large differences between data and predictions are observed which
are traced to differences in the helicity amplitudes of well known and
established resonances. Precise values for the helicity amplitudes of several
resonances are reported
The polarization observables T, P, and H and their impact on multipoles
Data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction are reported. Compared to earlier data from other experiments, our
data are more precise and extend the covered range in energy and angle
substantially. The results were extracted from azimuthal asymmetries measured
using a transversely polarized target and linearly polarized photons. The data
were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA with the CBELSA/TAPS
detector. Within the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis, the new polarization
data lead to a significant narrowing of the error band for the multipoles for
neutral-pion photoproduction
